Field of View
A day in the life of Jennifer Lemak, MA ’00, PhD ’04, NYS Museum Chief Curator of History

Jennifer Lemak is a time-traveler. She could start mornings off in the Ice Age tending to a giant mastodon; when lunch rolls around, she might be hanging out in1920s Harlem; and the late afternoon could find her amid the debris of the World Trade Center contemplating the events of 9/11.There are also meetings, VIP tours, visits to the restoration unit, and lunch at her desk. That’s life as chief curator of history for the New York State Museum. UAlbany Magazine hopped into Lemak’s time machine for a mind-bending behind-the scenes trip through the museum.

Gifts at Work

Named in honor of a generous bequest in 2014, the Alice Hastings Murphy Preservation Department, part of the University Libraries, plays a vital role in safeguarding the University Libraries’ General and Special Collections. The department, housed on the top floor of the Science Library, ensures the longevity of library materials by monitoring environmental conditions, responding to emergencies and training staff in preservation techniques. Actively engaged in professional conservation associations, the department also offers public outreach programs, fostering awareness of preservation practices within the broader community.
